Here are some basic rules of playing Volleyball

  • A team consists of six players, three in the front row and three in the back row.
  • A maximum of three hits per side is permitted.
  • A player may not hit the ball twice in a row (A block is not considered a hit)
  • During a volley and on a server, the ball may be played off the net.
  • A ball that crosses a boundary line is considered “in.”
  • If a ball hits, antennas, the entire floor outside of the court, any of the nets or cables located outside of the antennas, the referee pole or stand, the space above a non-playable section’s ceiling it is “out.”
  • It is permissible for a player to make contact with the ball with any part of his or her body.
  • It is prohibited to catch, hold, or throw the ball.
  • If two or more players make simultaneous contact with the ball, it is considered one play, and either player may make the following contact (provided the next contact is not the team’s fourth hit).
  • A player may not block or assault a serve from within or on the 10-foot line.
  • Following the service, front-line players may change places at the Volleyball net height.
  • At higher levels of play, the officiating crew may include two referees, line judges, a scorer, and an assistant scorer.
