Patrick van Aanholt, the Crystal Palace defender, is persuaded that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the strongest Englishman full-back.
At the start of the 2019-20 season, Wan-Bissaka, 22, joined Manchester United from the South London club and quickly claimed an undoubted place in the starting line-up of Red Devils.
Patrick van Aanholt puts more value in a team’s defence game. He thus crowns Wan-Bissaka over even Trent Alexander-Arnold. “Defending comes first, so you need to play in the modern game, so at United, you have most of the pitch, and move in and demonstrate what you got, so he did well,” he told the Counter Attack podcast, while asked about United’s young leader.
“I have admiration for Trent and with his assists he does all because he’s amazing but defensively just ask Sterling how strong Wan-Bissaka is,” he said. “He’s one of the best right-backs, I think he may be, he’s nice at defending, but he requires more goals or assists to his name.”
While Alexander-Arnold is a year younger than his United competitor, he already boasts a medal of winners in the Champions League and is almost assured of finishing as a champion in the Premier League in 2020. Van Aanholt still favors his former team-mate.
“Better than Alexander-Arnold? Without a possibility of doubt.
“They are different athletes. Aaron is amazing defensively, stronger than Trent.”
He prioritizes Aaron’s defence, even as he admits Trent is amazing in his attacks:
“Yeah, Trent has had his attacking, his right foot, and his corners. But if you question Wilf Zaha who he’d prefer to play against, Trent or Wan-Bissaka any other day, then I guess he’ll choose Trent.”
