US Open: When Petra Kvitova survived match points to overcome Garbine Muguruza in a nail-biting US Open match on Saturday, she claimed that Serena Williams served as her motivation.
In a tight match between the two previous Grand Slam champions, Kvitova saved two match points to force a tie-break before winning 5-7 6-3 7-6 (12-10) on her fourth match point.
You set the standard, then you raised the bar. You inspired us, you challenged us, you made us stronger.

On Friday night, Kvitova watched Serena Williams‘ heartbreaking final match against Ajla Tomljanovic, in which she fought to the end and prevailed on five match points.
“I saw those match points when she didn’t give up,” said the Czech, who was in tears at the end. “She always hit a beautiful return. It was very special, she didn’t want to leave the court, for sure.
“That was the same case with me today. I didn’t want to go out of this tournament, so I was just there hanging somehow. She was playing aggressively, as well. Me too.
“So I was trying to go for it with these first serves or for aces. I think it was nice to see her yesterday fighting until the end.”
