US Open: Four Brits make it to the third round thanks to Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans

US Open: With outstanding victories on Thursday, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans became the third British tennis players, along with Andy Murray and Jack Draper, to advance to the third round of the US Open.

Given his extraordinary consistency and top-eight ranking, British No. 1 Norrie entered the competition as the banker of the quartet, and he has not let down.

After remaining composed while battling Benoit Paire’s waning focus in round one, Norrie outlasted Portugal’s Sousa in a more traditional match, winning 6-4 6-4 7-6. (7-4).

“It’s great, we’re all feeding off each other and it’s good because we’ve got a great team leading into Davis Cup and we’re all in form, all playing well and enjoying our tennis,” Norrie told Prime Video.

“It’s really nice for us to show that all the hard work and all the work the LTA is doing and there are plenty more guys just behind us as well.”

The lone issue occurred late in the third set when Norrie had to save a set point at 5-6, but he maintained his lead throughout the tie-break to advance without incident.

With the win, the seventh seed has already matched his best performance in New York and will now play 19-year-old Dane Holger Rune. Hopefully, he still has much more to give.

“Holger is very competitive and he’s kind of the next generation,” added Norrie. “I actually played him pretty recently in Cincinnati and we always have a battle so it’s going to be tough and definitely have to improve.”

Evans defeated James Duckworth to go to the third round for a record-setting sixth time at the US Open.

Evans, the No. 2 ranked player in Britain, has only ever failed to get past the round of 32 while playing in the main draw. That time, he reached the fourth round one year ago.

Evans looked to be in for another easy afternoon against Australian Duckworth when he slid into a two-set lead after dropping only six games to Jiri Vesely in the first round.

The 83rd-ranked Duckworth, however, had a breakpoint in the ninth game of the third set and an early break in the fourth before Evans came back to win the match 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4.

After saving his first match point with a backhand pass threaded down the line, the 20th seed did not hold back his joy at the outcome, opening his arms wide and sprinting to the net.
