The PGA Tour wants to remove the governor of the Saudi PIF and follow discovery

According to a motion submitted by the PGA Tour on Friday in U.S. District Court, “Project Wedge” was the inspiration behind LIV Golf and its disruptive entry into the professional golf industry.

The motion seeks to have Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund, deposed and comply with discovery in a lawsuit that was filed against the Tour by a group of players and LIV Golf earlier this summer. According to the motion, “Project Wedge” was the internal designation at the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for LIV Golf.

Despite the fact that Al-Rumayyan and the PIF are not mentioned in the complaint, the fund has made $2 billion in investments and is thought to hold 85% of LIV, while the precise percentage is redacted in the court documents.

The fund “is an organ and integral component of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” according to Al-Rumayyan and PIF’s legal representatives, and “is entitled to sovereign protection unless the Tour can prove an exception.” It is unable. PIF and Al-Rumayyan, according to the application to dismiss the Tour’s request, only provide “high-level monitoring, not the pervasive control over day-to-day activities [of LIV],” and they contend that its governing statute forbids the publication of internal information.

Al-Rumayyan, according to the Tour’s response, “functions as LIV’s chief executive, regularly meeting with LIV’s nominal CEO Greg Norman, approving LIV’s budget, making important strategic decisions, taking part in player recruitment in the United States, and micro-managing LIV’s day-to-day operations.

Mr Al-Rumayyan and PIF are the main players. They are the man behind the curtain, making decisions, approving spending, and providing the funding, according to the motion.

Al-Rumayyan is referred to as the circuit’s “Chairman of the Board and the CEO and Commissioner” in LIV Golf’s own rules and regulations, and the Tour’s legal counsel points out that he actively met with and recruited players to LIV.

The nearly 200-page motion paints a picture of close cooperation between the PIF and LIV that dates back to the earliest remnants of the rival league. It includes more than 400 emails between PIF executives and executives with LIV in the United States, as well as “evidence regarding PIF’s involvement with the [Premier Golf League] and the true reason for the PGL’s collapse, is within PIF’s control.”

Judge Susan van Keulen of the Northern District of California may decide on the motions based on written arguments or she may demand a hearing in person.
