Tennis Tournament: At the Sydney Classic, Emma Raducanu lost her first match of the year, 6-0 6-1, to Elena Rybakina in just 55 minutes.

The British No. 1 was competing in her first competitive match after appointing Torben Beltz as her new head coach in November.

The 19-year-old pounded the air with joy after scoring in the tenth game after losing the first nine games in a row.

Despite Raducanu’s small settling, Rybakina immediately retaliated, leaving Raducanu with far too much to do.

Raducanu was scheduled to perform at the Melbourne Summer Set last week. However, she postponed her return to competitive play since Covid-19 hampered her lead until the 2022 season.

Rybakina, on the other hand, was match-ready after reaching the final of the Adelaide International and only being defeated by world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty.

Raducanu raced 40-15 up in her first service game after going out to a standing ovation from the audience inside the Ken Rosewall Arena before being pulled back to deuce.

She then survived a breakpoint before giving Rybakina the early lead and platform with her third double fault in the game.

The velocity of Rybakina’s shots continued to make the British No 1 uncomfortable as the first set progressed.

Raducanu struggled to find her stride from the back of the court, and she had little time to redirect her answers back to the ninth seed, falling behind 4-0 and then 6-0.

The start of the second set provided little respite for the 19-year-old, who had won the US Open in such a dramatic way the year before.

Her resolve to keep trying to overcome problems earned her the game’s tenth game and helped her salvage two match points.

Raducanu, however, must find out why Rybakina’s power overwhelmed her, how she can counter it, and how she can deal with in-form, experienced tour players like Rybakina on a daily basis with the help of new coach Beltz.
