Tennis News: In the quarterfinals of the revised team tournament, Medvedev defeated Mikael Ymer 6-4, 6-4 to give Russia an overwhelming 2-0 lead over Sweden.

Andrey Rublev had previously defeated Mikael’s older brother, Elias Ymer, in a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) victory in the Madrid Arena.

On Saturday, Russia will meet Germany in the semi-finals. On Friday, Serbia, led by world number one Novak Djokovic, will meet Croatia in the other semi-final.

After wins over Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta and Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez in the group round, it was Medvedev’s third consecutive straight-set triumph.

Medvedev broke service twice in the first set and three times in the second against Sweden’s top-ranked player, No. 94 Mikael Ymer.

“I should’ve served better today,” Medvedev said, “but I’m extremely delighted to contribute the point to the squad.” “What matters most is that we are winning a lot of games.” In the group, we didn’t lose a tie, and we’re looking forward to Saturday.”

In the event’s maiden edition in 2019, Russia defeated Serbia in the quarterfinals before falling to Canada in the final four. After victories in 2002 and 2006, Russia is chasing their third Davis Cup crown.

In the competition, the Russian team will be known as RTF (Russian Tennis Federation) due to the country’s continuing doping prohibition in international sport.

Rublev, who is rated fifth, had a considerably tougher time than Medvedev in his singles encounter against Elias Ymer, who is ranked 171st.

He served for the match at 5-4 in the second set after breaking serve twice to win the first, but couldn’t close it out as Ymer took three straight games.

“When I’m serving for the match, I relax a little more than I should,” Rublev remarked. “I missed a couple of easy forehands that you shouldn’t miss if you’re focused and doing everything correctly.” I reintroduce him to the game. Then he begins to believe in himself, and he begins to play a lot better.”

The Swede saved seven break points in total in the decisive set to keep it close, but Rublev won in the tiebreaker for his second straight win after losing to Spain’s Feliciano López in the first round. Elias Ymer had come out on top in both of his group stage bouts.

Russia won a group that featured Spain and Ecuador, while Sweden finished second after playing in a group that included Kazakhstan and Canada, the runner-up in 2019.

Shamil Tarpischev, the longest-serving Davis Cup captain, is playing in his 100th match against Russia.

In 2019, Madrid was the lone host of the team tournament, while matches were also held in Innsbruck, Austria, and Turin, Italy. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was cancelled last year.
