Tennis News: The former world No. 1 was competing in her first tournament since withdrawing from the US Open in September due to mental health issues; Osaka stated her withdrawal was due to an abdominal injury.

As she prepares to defend her Australian Open crown, Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from her semi-final at the Melbourne Summer Set due to an injury.

Osaka stated in a statement released by Tennis Australia: “I had a great time playing in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I’m recovering from an abdominal ailment and need to recuperate in order to prepare for the Australian Open.”

Osaka later commented on Twitter: “My body received a shock after playing back-to-back hard matches following the break I took, thus I had to withdraw from my match today due to injury. I’ll try to get some rest and see you shortly!”

After losing to Leylah Fernandez in the third round of the US Open in September, the four-time Grand Slam winner took a hiatus from tennis.

Following her successful return to action earlier this week in Melbourne, Osaka stated that her major goal for 2022 is to feel like she is “having joy” on the court.

On Friday, the 24-year-old overcame German Andrea Petkovic in straight sets to go to the semifinals of the Melbourne warm-up.

The Australian Open begins on January 17, and Osaka will be attempting to win her fifth Grand Slam championship.

Prior to the withdrawal, Veronika Kudermetova was expected to face the Japanese world number 13; the Russian will instead face Simona Halep in the final after the Romanian advanced with a straight-set triumph over Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen.
