Tennis News: Naomi Osaka announced her retirement from tennis at the US Open; the 23-year-old won her maiden WTA championship in Indian Wells last year; Johanna Konta has also withdrawn from the forthcoming WTA competitions in Chicago and Indian Wells.

Naomi Osaka, who announced her retirement from tennis during the US Open, has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells next month.

After falling in the third round of the year’s final major, the four-time Grand Slam champion told reporters she needed the break to focus on her mental health.

Osaka has struggled on the court since withdrawing from the French Open in May due to a disagreement with tournament administrators about mandatory media appearances, which she said had a negative impact on her performance.

In 2018, the 23-year-old Japanese player claimed her maiden WTA title in Indian Wells.

The tournament remarked on Twitter, “We look forward to seeing you in 2022, Naomi.”

Konta withdraws from the Chicago Open and heads to Indian Wells

Johanna Konta has withdrawn from the WTA tournaments in Chicago and Indian Wells.

Last month, the 30-year-old withdrew from the US Open owing to a thigh ailment, just hours before her first-round match.

Konta also missed Wimbledon after a member of her staff tested positive for Covid-19 on the tournament’s final day, and she withdrew from the Olympic Games after getting the virus.
