Tennis News: After a historic 2021 season, Emma Raducanu has been named the WTA Newcomer of the Year.

The British youngster astonished the world by becoming the first qualifier to win a grand slam at the US Open, followed by a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon despite having never won a match on the regular WTA Tour.

Raducanu, who has gained international acclaim since her victory in New York, completed the year ranked 19th in the world, after a spectacular ascent from 343rd at the start of 2021.

“Emma Raducanu was voted the WTA Newcomer of the Year after being the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam at the US Open in 2021, where she did not drop a set in all ten of her matches,” the WTA Tour announced.

“This year, she made her grand slam main draw debut at Wimbledon, reaching the last 16 and being the youngest British woman to do so at the All-England Club.

“She also made the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open and reached the final of the Chicago WTA 125 this season” (Cluj-Napoca). The British youngster began the year rated 343rd and finished with a career-high ranking of World No. 19.”

Raducanu has won numerous honours, including BT Sport Action Woman of the Year and Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, and she is likely to add to her tally at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday, where she is the clear favourite.

Ashleigh Barty, the world No. 1 and Wimbledon champion, was named WTA Player of the Year.
