Tennis News: With a 2-0 triumph over Croatia on Sunday, Daniil Medvedev was undefeated in the Davis Cup finals, helping Russia Tennis Federation win their first trophy in 15 years.

Andrey Rublev defeated Borna Gojo and Medvedev defeated Marin Cilic a month after the Russians won the Billie Jean King Cup finals, giving the country the two most coveted medals in international team tennis.

It’s the first time a Russian team has won the Davis Cup since 2006, and Medvedev stated in an on-court interview, “It feels wonderful, but I’m more delighted for the team than I am for myself.”

“We have an incredible squad and an incredible atmosphere, and I’m simply grateful to be a part of it and to be able to contribute the points that we require. It was an incredible two weeks since coming here at the conclusion of the season is never easy. Two of the most memorable weeks of my professional life.”

The Russians ensured their ranking supremacy translated into silverware despite being barred from playing under their flag due to anti-doping rules infractions.

The only team with two players ranked in the top ten in singles, the RTF team finished the job before Croatia’s trump card, world No. 1 doubles combo Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, could be used.

Rublev has had a rocky fortnight, but he found form in Russia’s semi-final triumph over Germany, and he’ll look to continue that against Gojo, who has been the tournament’s surprise package.

Gojo, ranked 279, had won his previous three singles matches against opponents with far higher rankings.

He gave it him all again, but Rublev was too strong in the end, winning 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in the final.

That set the way for US Open champion Medvedev, who had yet to drop a set throughout the tournament, and he delivered yet another outstanding effort, defeating Cilic 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.
