Tennis News: Cameron Norrie was defeated in the final of the San Diego Open by Casper Ruud, but there was good news for Britain in the doubles final, which was won by Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury.

Earlier in the competition, Norwegian second seed Rudd defeated Andy Murray, while Norrie had defeated British No. 1 Dan Evans, Denis Shapovalov, and top seed Andrey Rublev.

But the 22-year-old was too strong in the final, destroying Norrie’s chances of winning his second ATP tour championship of 2021 with a 6-0 6-2 victory.

Rudd challenged Norrie to wrap up a bagel in 27 minutes.

Norrie won his opening game early in the second, but Ruud broke for 4-2 and again to win the championship.

“Daniil (Medvedev) and Novak (Djokovic) have more championships, so I wouldn’t mind exchanging places with them if I could trade five 250s for three Slams and a 250 Novak possesses. It’s a little more advanced, but that’s great. Obviously, I think that’s more amazing than five 250s, but I’ll take it “Ruud said, laughing. “I can’t lie, it would be wonderful to end the year with the most titles.”

Brits Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury won the doubles title with a 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 10-5 triumph over John Peers and Filip Polasek.

Meanwhile, Neal’s brothers Ken Skupski and Jonny O’Mara won the Sofia doubles title, defeating third seeds Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald 6-3 6-4 in the final.

Jannik Sinner of Italy defeated second seed Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-4 to defend his title in Bulgaria and increase his prospects of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Sinner will move up to tenth place in the Race to Turin as he attempts to qualify for the season finale on home soil. The season finale will take place from the 14th to the 21st of November at the Pala Alpitour in Turin.

Garbine Muguruza fought to defeat Ons Jabeur 3-6 6-3 6-0 at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic, her second WTA Tour victory of the season and ninth overall, to improve her prospects of qualifying for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico.
