Tennis News: According to new British men’s No. 1 Cameron Norrie, Emma Raducanu’s US Open victory was “utterly magnificent” and “inspiring.”

Raducanu astonished the athletic world by winning the women’s singles title as a qualifier at Flushing Meadows without dropping a set.

Norrie’s win at the prestigious BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells may not be on par with the 18-year-triumph old’s in New York, but their combined success has catapulted British tennis to new heights.

“That was utterly fantastic what she achieved in New York to come through qualifying and then to go out and just hammer every opponent that she had,” the world No. 16 told.

“She won in straight sets, and to do it at such a young age, with such confidence, and to come out and own every match was incredibly impressive to me.

“It will undoubtedly instil confidence and belief in the girls around her ranking prior to the US Open.

“Her victory in New York emboldened me. It means a lot for British tennis. I’m confident it’ll inspire a new generation of young boys and girls to pick up a racket and start playing tennis at home in the UK.”

Norrie’s victory over Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in the California desert propelled him to a new career-high after beginning the year at 71.

“I’m running on a high right now,” the British No. 1 said after winning his second title in his sixth final of 2021. It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks.

“My parents didn’t watch the game because they were too frightened to do so, so when I spoke to them afterwards, they were in tears.”
