Murray, who is currently ranked 109th, breezed through the first round with a straight-set triumph over lucky loser Denis Kudla of the United States.

The Norwegian, who won four clay-court titles in Europe earlier this year, afterwards lauded Murray’s return, saying he played “at a great level” in their encounter.
“On the other side of the net from me was a legend of the game for the past decade or so, and even what he’s done now for the past year, fighting his way back from extremely serious injuries, has been an inspiration for me,” Ruud said in an on-court interview carried on ATP Tennis TV.
“He’s been an inspiration to watch on TV for the past 10 or 15 years, the way he fights and constantly finds a way to never give up.”
“He’s been playing fantastically. It’s been a difficult couple of years for him, but it’s nice to have him back, and I believe he was playing well today.”
Murray, who reached the quarterfinals of last week’s Moselle Open in Metz, has been given a wild card into the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Norrie came from behind in the first set to defeat compatriot Evans in their match in San Diego.
Norrie defeated Britain’s top two-ranked players 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 after rallying from 5-2 down and saved two match points in the first set.
It preserved Norrie’s excellent record against eighth seed Evans, who Norrie defeated in the opening round of this year’s Australian Open.
Denis Shapovalov of Canada advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating American Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7) 6-2.
Russian world number 24 Aslan Karatsev upset fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 5-7 6-4 6-2 and will now face 29th-ranked Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who cruised through Danish lucky loser August Holmgren 6-1 6-1, and Italian ninth seed Lorenzo Sonego downed American Sebastian Korda 6-4 6-3.
