Tennis News: Andy Murray won his first match of 2022 in straight sets over Viktor Durasovic in the first round of the Sydney Tennis Classic, continuing his preparations for the Australian Open.

It was the former world No. 1’s first win in Australia since defeating James Duckworth in January 2019, following which he acknowledged in a pre-Australian Open press conference that his hip issue may cause him to retire.

Murray, who received a wild card into the year’s first Grand Slam, cruised over world No 345 Durasovic 6-3 6-1 in only 72 minutes to avenge his season-opening loss to Facundo Bagnis in Melbourne last week.

Murray stated in his on-court interview, “It’s amazing conditions here.” “It’s as though you’re playing inside.” It’s great to have your collection here, and perhaps I’ll be able to take it with me to Melbourne.

“Last week, I was expecting to get some matches in Melbourne, but that didn’t happen.” I am grateful to the tournament organisers and Tennis Australia for agreeing to offer me a wild card and the opportunity to play here.”

On his way to a second-round match with Georgian second seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, the Scot won 25 of 26 first-serve points.

Murray last competed in the Australian Open in 2019, losing in the first round to Roberto Bautista Agut after reaching the final five times, as well as semi-finals and quarter-finals, between 2010 and 2016.
