Tennis News: For the second time in his career, Alexander Zverev defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev to win the ATP Finals.

Alexander Zverev, who also defeated world No. 1, Novak Djokovic, on Saturday, is only the fourth player in history to defeat the world’s top two players in the season-ending tournament’s semi-finals and final.

The 6-4 6-4 triumph was also delicious retribution for Zverev, who had lost in three sets against Medvedev in the round-robin stage and had lost his previous five meetings with the Russian.

The third seed put on a near-perfect performance, particularly on serve, with Medvedev unable to apply any serious pressure during the match.

It is Zverev’s second title at the tournament in four years; he also won at London’s O2 Arena in 2018.

“It was wonderful,” the German, who won Olympic gold in the summer, said in an on-court interview. I won the World Tour Finals in the final against a player I had previously lost to five times in a row, so I had to play one of my finest matches. That makes me joyful, and I’m excited to be going on vacation with this victory.

“There is no better way to finish the season than with a win here.” I’m definitely overjoyed, but I’m also already looking forward to next year.”

Salisbury of the UK is defeated in the doubles final

In the doubles final, Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram were defeated by Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

Salisbury was the first British player to reach the finals in the event’s history, and he hoped to follow in the footsteps of Andy Murray, who won the singles title in 2016.

He and American Ram had barely defeated Herbert and Mahut in the group rounds, but the French combination was the better team on the day and merited their 6-4 7-6 (7-0) triumph.

“It’s definitely disappointing,” Salisbury added. “It was a little of a combo of them playing extremely well, especially serving, and we didn’t quite find it today, didn’t play our best.”

Salisbury is due to partner Neal Skupski for the United Kingdom in the upcoming Davis Cup finals, and their first encounter is expected to be against Herbert and Mahut in what might be a pivotal rubber in the opening round against France next Saturday.
