Tennis Court: Andy Murray got off to a good start in the new season with a convincing victory against British opponent Dan Evans in Abu Dhabi.

Murray looked crisp and moved effectively in a 6-3 6-2 victory over Djokovic at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships.

Evans was a late substitute, which may explain why he wasn’t at his best, despite the fact that the 31-year-old was in the middle of his preparations for the start of the new season next month.

Murray, who parted ways with long-time coach Jamie Delgado last week and is undergoing a trial period with German Jan De Witt, put on a promising performance.

In an on-court interview, Murray said: “We practise a lot together, so we’re quite familiar with each other’s games. We always play a lot of long rallies and points. Dan possesses abilities that only a few players on the tour possess. It’s a good beginning.”

Murray and Evans have never met in a competitive match, but Murray came out on top in a close battle at the Battle of the Brits last December.

“He did a good job,” Evans remarked. “I didn’t have much fun with it. I did a few things exceptionally well. Not nearly enough. But it was fantastic to have the opportunity to perform in front of such a large audience.”

The Scot will now be Rafael Nadal’s first opponent when he returns from an extended layoff due to a foot injury on Friday.

“I didn’t know whether I’d ever get another opportunity to play matches like that,” Murray said. “Rafa is someone with whom I’ve had some fantastic clashes at some of the world’s most prestigious events. It’ll be fantastic. Hopefully, we’ll be able to put on a fantastic show.”
