Serena Williams has undergone oral surgery and has announced her withdrawal from the Miami Open. The 23 time Grand Slam champion joins Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who have all withdrawn from the tournament that starts on Monday.
“Miami is a special tournament for me because it’s my home,” Williams said. “I am sad I won’t be able to see the incredible fans this year, but I look forward to coming back soon.”
Williams had lost to eventual winner Naomi Osaka in last month’s Australian Open and was hoping to gain momentum before Wimbledon. Andy Murray, who has been riddled with a number of hip injuries has been given a wildcard for the tournament.
