Novak Djokovic is on the official entry list for the 2022 Australian Open, but Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, is not.

Despite the fact that everyone at Melbourne Park is required to be immunised against COVID-19, Djokovic, who was also on the entrance list for the ATP Cup in Sydney when it was revealed on Tuesday, has refused to reveal his vaccination status.

Williams, who won the last of her seven Australian Open titles in 2017, hasn’t played since limping out of her first-round match at Wimbledon in tears due to a leg injury.

Craig Tiley, the tournament’s organiser, said last month that the 40-year-old American, who needs one more Grand Slam championship to equal Margaret Court’s 24-year record, would be participating at Melbourne Park from January 17 to January 30.

Djokovic, who would be seeking a record 21st Grand Slam men’s singles championship if he competes, stated last week that he would decide “very soon” whether or not to fly to Australia.

When the Serbia team for the ATP Cup, which will be hosted in Sydney in early January, was announced on Tuesday, the 34-year-old was included.

The state government would have to ask for an exemption for Djokovic to play in Sydney without being inoculated, and he would have to undergo a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

Williams paused for a moment and put her hand on her heart as she exited Rod Laver Arena to a standing ovation after losing in the semi-finals to Naomi Osaka at this year’s Australian Open, later sobbing cutting short a press conference.

Her name was the most obvious exclusion from the field, with Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, already confirming his absence as he recovers from another round of knee surgery.

Meanwhile, Bianca Andreescu, the former world No. 4 and the 2019 US Open women’s singles champion, has declared that she will skip the Australian Open in order to “reset” and “recover” from a rough period in her career.
