Tennis News Today: To get to the final, Petra Kvitova defeats Madison Keys

Tennis News Today: The Cincinnati Open final will feature Petra Kvitova after she overcame a slow start and 10 double faults to defeat Madison Keys 6-7(6) 6-4 6-3 on Saturday.

In the opening match of the day on a humid Centre Court, a sluggish Kvitova struggled to get going but delivered some of her finest tennis when it counted, breaking the American favourite to start the third set and once more to secure a place in Sunday’s final.

The 32-year-old Czech will compete in his 40th WTA Tour singles final, but it will be his first in Cincinnati.

The two-time Wimbledon winner will take on either French qualifier Caroline Garcia or sixth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, who participated in a second semi-final that was postponed due to rain.

“I expected it to be tough but I didn’t expect it to be that tough,” said Kvitova, who will return to the top 20 of the world rankings on Monday. “I don’t really care about the ranking.”

“Being in the final is of course more important, that is why I play tennis to be in the final and fight for the trophy.”

Keys, the 2019 winner of Cincinnati, got out to a fast start and received a break when Kvitova double-failed three times to take a 2-1 lead.

But as the set slipped into a tiebreak, which Keys won 8-6, Kvitova gradually gained control of her serve and groundstrokes, breaking back to tie the score at 3-3.

Having jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second, Kvitova struggled to hold on as Keys came back to even the score at 5-4.

Kvitova would not waste another opportunity to force a decision by serving for the set a second time.

Kvitova put pressure on Keys right away, breaking him with a powerful forehand return to claim the opening break.

“It was an incredible battle,” Kvitova said in her post-match press conference. “I have to say Madison played a really great match. It was a really, really tight one.

“This is very special, to be honest. I was going to the match today, and I was telling myself that I have never been in the final here. … I had many, many finals but never here. So finally it’s here. Actually, who knows how it will end tomorrow, but this is already a big step for me.”
