On Saturday, defeated Roman Safiullin in the Tel Aviv semifinals in straight sets to advance to his fourth final of 2022. The 35-year-old Djokovic won 6-1, 7-6 (7/3) and will take on either Marin Cilic of Croatia or Constant Lestienne of France in Sunday’s championship match to try and win his third championship of the year and 89th overall. Before facing a break point, the former world number one Djokovic stormed to a 5-0 lead and won the opening set in just 23 minutes.
Safiullin, the 104th-ranked player in the world trying to reach his first ATP final, was much more competitive in the second set.
In the sixth game, he faced two break points that Djokovic saved. The 25-year-old Russian was made to pay as the 21-time Grand Slam champion broke to take a 5-4 lead.
After 94 minutes on the court, Djokovic prevailed after Safiullin fought back to square the score at 6-6.
As a Grand Slam champion who has won titles in Rome and Wimbledon this year, Djokovic is presently ranked seventh and only needs to place in the top 20 to secure a spot in the ATP Finals.
