Tennis Championship: Andy Murray advanced to the quarter-finals of the BOSS Open in Stuttgart after defeating Kazakh player Bublik 6-3 7-6 (7-4) on Thursday, following his two-set win against Australia’s Christopher O’Connell on Tuesday.
Andy Murray advanced to the quarter-finals of the BOSS Open in Stuttgart after defeating seventh seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets. He will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Murray, 35, backed up his two-set win over Australia’s Christopher O’Connell on Tuesday with a 6-3 7-6 victory against Kazakh star Bublik on Thursday (7-4).
In the final eight, the British player will face top seed Tsitsipas, who defeated Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker 6-3 6-4.
Murray dropped serve twice in a row against Bublik in the second set but saved two set chances at 5-2 down and another two games later before winning five of the final six points in the tie-break.
Murray said afterwards: “[Bublik] is predictable in his unpredictability. You’re prepared for some amazing shots and then maybe some loose games.
“In the second set, he played some incredible stuff for five or six games, and everything was coming together.”
“I was getting a bit frustrated but I kept fighting, held a tough game at 5-2 and then I thought I played well through to the finish.”
Murray now has a 3-1 record versus Bublik, with three of those victories coming this season.
The British player defeated Bublik in Rotterdam before losing in Indian Wells to his opponent.
Murray will also compete in next week’s event at Queen’s Club, which he has won five times (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016) before Wimbledon begins on June 27.
