Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has revealed that he has stopped using social media.
“There are so many fake accounts, people hiding behind their computers to make you feel bad. There’s a lot of racism, insults against family members. I don’t like it and I don’t read it,” Leno said to Sky Sports.
“It affects your life, what’s the point?”
“Of course, I have a lot of experience in this matter. I have faced abuse in both England and Germany. One time a thing like that happened, it just wouldn’t go out of my head. It was crazy,” he said.
“I played a match really bad and a guy wrote to me on social media, “Do like Anke.”
In 2009, former Hannover, Benfica, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Barcelona goalkeeper Robert Enke commited suicide at the age of 32.
And so, Leno continued: “When I read that, I realised how many stupid people are on social media. For that reason, I don’t read anything, even if it’s going well. I don’t need it, it doesn’t make me a better person, it’s a waste of time.”
