Sergio Perez was told that he had lost his Formula 1 seat hours before announcement

Sergio Perez has said that there was nothing to prepare him for the news that Sebastian Vettel would be replacing him at Racing Point as he was made aware of his loss of an F1 seat just hours before the announcement. Perez confirmed via his social media on Wednesday that he would be leaving the Silverstone-based team after seven years at the end of 2020, with Vettel revealed on Thursday morning as his high-profile replacement.

“The final confirmation came yesterday. Nobody told me anything. It’s fine. Seven years with the team.” a dejected Perez said, who was told the news on the phone by Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll. “Nobody told me anything. It’s fine. Seven years with the team.”

“All the feedback that I was getting was that I was pretty sure, and they were pretty sure, and we all wanted to continue. Things changed in the end,” he added. “Now I can look after my future and see what’s available out there, see if there’s something that motivates me to stay in Formula 1. There are options out there. I’m surprised at the options there are.”

“I don’t feel I need to rush into anything,” Perez continued. “I need to get on with this weekend with my racing and I want to see what’s on the table, and then I will be making a decision. But I don’t expect to make a decision any time soon.”
