Mirabai Chanu, an Indian weightlifter, is the talk of the town right now, and she has earned it. The 26-year-old, who represented 1.3 billion people at the Tokyo Olympics, showed no signs of giving in to the pressure as she lifted 202 kg (Snatch, Clean, and Jerk) to win a historic silver medal in the 49 kg division. It is India’s only medal from the Tokyo Olympics to date, which says volumes about the significance of her feat.
Mirabai Chanu returned to her birthplace of Imphal, Manipur, on Tuesday after a long absence. Thousands of people greeted the Indian athlete at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, which was also attended by Manipur’s Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh. Mirabai went to hug her parents as soon as she saw them waiting for her at the airport, culminating in a highly emotional moment.

Mirabai received INR 1 crore reward from Manipur CM
The Indian weightlifter was initially transported to Imphal’s City Convention Centre, where Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh congratulated her. As promised by the Chief Minister, Mirabai Chanu received a cheque for INR 1 crore. In addition, the 26-year-old was awarded INR 10 lakhs from the YAS Department and INR 3 lakhs from the Education Department.
Mirabai Chanu has been appointed to the position of Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Manipur Police Department by the Governor of Manipur. On Tuesday, she went to the office to pick up her appointment letter, and she was approached by a couple of police offers. Mirabai’s historic homecoming to her homeland after making the country proud was a day to remember.
