On Friday, Dr Shigeru Omi met with officials of the Tokyo 2020 local organising committee, telling them that the “optimal approach” to maintain safety in the face of the coronavirus epidemic was to host the Games without spectators.

The Japanese government’s top coronavirus consultant has suggested that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games be held behind closed doors.

On Friday, Dr Shigeru Omi met with officials of the Tokyo 2020 local organising committee, telling them that the “best approach” to maintain safety in the face of the epidemic was to host the Games without spectators.

However, the organisers stated on Friday that they are still looking for methods to allow a restricted number of Japanese spectators to attend.

At a news conference, Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto stated, “The suggestions from Dr Omi have suggested that ideally, the best approach is to host the Games without spectators – that was his proposal.”

“However, if we are to host the Games with spectators, he has his own proposals.”

“When we look at other sporting events like J.League and professional baseball, they have supplied us with adequate proof of what they have been able to do so far despite the conditions,” Hashimoto continued.

“When we look at other sporting events like J.League and professional baseball, they have supplied us with adequate proof of what they have been able to do so far despite the conditions,” Hashimoto continued.

“As a result, we must consider those factors as well, and the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are quite exceptional.”

“As a result, Dr Omi has stated that we must be even more strict than the other sporting games, which I understand. As a result, we need to consider tighter restrictions, which is what I believe we should do.”

Hashimoto stated that a five-party conference would be held on Monday to continue negotiations about spectators.

The Tokyo 2020 organising committee, the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the Tokyo metropolitan government, and the national government are the five parties.
