UFC 269: Amanda Nunes, the women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion is the greatest female athlete in the UFC, according to Paul Craig.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Nunes defends her championship against Julianna Pena, and UFC light heavyweight Craig lauded the champion’s credentials before the fight.

He told Sky Sports, “Nunes is one of the finest female athletes to ever grace any sport.”

“I believe she is a sports ambassador.”

“She’s made great people seem average,” the Scot continued, referring to the champion’s technical knockout of Holly Holm in 2019, in which the Brazilian used Holm’s own hallmark head kick to deadly effect.

Because of Anderson’s height and stature advantage, Craig thought Nunes would face one of her toughest tests in Megan Anderson at UFC 259 but feels Nunes’ first-round submission victory was “‘the Lioness’ doing her thing.”

Nunes hasn’t lost since 2014 and is riding a 12-fight winning streak that includes wins over current flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and former UFC champions Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey.

As a result, Craig confessed that he doesn’t see Pena having a chance to win on Sunday morning.

“Nunes “beats them [her opponents] at their own game,” he added, adding that “I can’t find anyone in any female level who can beat her.”

“You’ve got someone like Nunes who hits hard, who is technically a very strong striker, and she mixes it up between wrestling and striking, which is what MMA is all about – it’s not about relying on one thing.”

Despite the fact that Nunes’ divisions have talented rivals, Craig believes there is a significant gap in ability between the champion and any potential challengers, implying that Nunes will “rule for a long time until she decides she wants to take a step back.”

When this happens, Craig believes the female divisions of the UFC would lose appeal “because the belts will change hands a lot of times and we won’t have the celebrity that we have now in Amanda Nunes.”

“In the UFC, there’s one belt, and if you want it, you’ve got to chase it,” he said, praising the fact that the sport typically features the top fighters vying against each other for only one title in each weight class.

Pena will have a futile fight against Nunes at UFC 269, according to Craig, who believes the champion will win “any way she wants.”
