Pep Guardiola is expected to name the next assistant manager of Manchester City this summer, according to Goal.
Hence far, Mikel Arteta saw many players developing as individuals. Former youth Liverpool coach Rodolfo Borrell has stepped in to take on further responsibilities and succeeded in bringing academy talent into senior squad.
Former head coach of the New York City FC Domenec Torrent is a favourite nominee for the vacated position of assistant manager. Torrent worked in Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City as the Guardiola’s assistant before taking charge of the fellow City Football Group club in 2018.
Several former players were also related including former midfielder Xabi Alonso from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who currently manages Real Sociedad B.
There have also been reports that some of the players to have played under Guardiola, including Andres Iniesta and David Silva, may be appropriate for the position. However, since both players are in the phase of pulling down the curtain on their professional careers, this chance would come about too early.
An up-and-coming trainer is another choice Guardiola thinking about. The chance to collaborate under a two-time leading boss in the Champions League is an interesting idea for someone who wishes to receive their coaching badges.
No decision has been made yet, so when Guardiola actually chooses who’s going to seat next to him in the press box, it’s going to be one of the biggest summer signings of City.
The role isn’t as easy as being an ardent follower of Guardiola’s philosophy. The backroom team leaders are required to make important choices, criticize the strategies of Guardiola and develop a strong relationship with the players.
