Latest Tennis News: After a second-round win at the Miami Open, Poland’s Iga Swiatek will take over as world No. 1 from Ash Barty

Latest Tennis News: Following a 6-2 6-0 win over Viktorija Golubic in the second round of the Miami Open, Poland’s Iga Swiatek will take over as world No. 1 from Ash Barty.

The 20-year-old, who is the first Polish player to do so, was only promoted to world number two last week after winning the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and will take over the top rank following Barty’s surprise retirement on Wednesday.

When the new rankings are released on April 4, she will become the youngest player to debut at No 1 since Caroline Wozniacki, who was 216 days younger in 2010.

Swiatek is on a 12-match winning run and has 21 wins on the year, including WTA 1000 crowns in Doha and Indian Wells.

“I’m pretty sure that tomorrow the sun will shine exactly the same way as today but for now…it feels surreal. No.1!!” Swiatek wrote on Twitter following her win.

Once the tournament is over and Barty is removed, her No. 1 ranking will be officially recorded.

“The thing is, I never truly envisioned that moment because truth is told, I was working day-by-day and playing tennis well,” Swiatek said during a press conference. But I’ve never had a strong conviction that it could happen. As a result, it feels even more unreal to me.

“I loved every moment of it. It doesn’t matter to me if there were fireworks. The crowd was really supportive, they were really excited. I’m just soaking everything in because I didn’t have any expectations.”

Since the computerised system was created in November 1975, the Pole is the 28th woman to occupy the top spot.
