Jordan Henderson Says He Didn’t Swap Shirts with Messi on Roy Keane’s Advice

Jordan Henderson admitted that after Liverpool’s Champions League battle with Barcelona last season he didn’t exchange shirts with Lionel Messi- because of a lesson he learnt from Roy Keane.

Back then, the Liverpool skipper was at Sunderland and Keane was Henderson’s boss. Apparently, the long-time Manchester United great informed his players never to participate in the time-honoured jersey swap tradition: “When I was at Sunderland, Roy Keane told me that if you ask for somebody’s jacket, it looks like you’re afraid of them.”

Henderson remembered his first meet with Messi on a field- and the Reds midfielder claimed it was a world away from seeing him on TV. “You don’t think to yourself ‘Oh my Goodness – that’s him,’ but there’s no doubt that when you see him on TV, he plays the game differently. He’s so fast,” Henderson said to The Mirror. “Reflecting on his free-kick now, I really can’t believe he scored it. I honestly figured he’d take it short.”

As for practicing the age-old swapping tradition, Henderson followed Keane’s advice on the matter. “Did I consider asking for his shirt? No. I never did,” he said.

But Henderson went home with one Blaugrauna shirt from the Camp Nou former team-mate Suarez. “I came home as it turned out, with the shirt of Luis Suarez,” Henderson said.
