Horse Racing: Due to “increasing costs,” a Group One-winning trainer will resign at the end of the 2022 Flat season

Horse Racing: Harry Dunlop, who trained Group One winners, said that he would retire at the conclusion of the 2022 Flat season owing to “increasing costs” and the “present economic scenario.”

Dunlop has produced 169 winners in his 16 years as a trainer, with just five coming thus far in this campaign. His biggest day was in the 2015 Criterium de Saint-Cloud with Robin Of Navan.

Despite having a shortage of horses, Dunlop has had a remarkable few weeks recently. With Adaay In Asia, he won the Goodwood Festival, and on Saturday, the same horse won the Shergar Cup.

In a surprise statement on Monday, Dunlop said: “It is something I have thought about over the last few years and my main reason is that it is so hard to keep a business thriving in the current economic climate.

“When you don’t have a huge string of horses to cover the rising costs of staff, transport, feed, bedding, it is just not viable.

“Thankfully my business is in good shape, so I thought this was a good time to make this decision and to look for a new career. We have had some wonderful horses and clients over the years with many happy memorable days racing.”

With Jackfinbar, Knight To Behold, and Fighting Irish, Dunlop also experienced group-level success.

He is the second trainer in recent weeks to leave the game, joining Joe Tuite.

Dunlop and Tuite the first of many to go?

“The good news is that Harry Dunlop has three winners in his last eight runners. The bad news is that he now has five winners for 2022.

“The basic line is that given the current environment, we’ll see this more frequently.

“This was not, I’m certain, his choice. He would want to continue working as a trainer, especially after his recent success.

“Because of the situation, he must end the day. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard it recently, and I predict that before the year is out, additional trainers in a similar situation will have to pull the plug.

“It is a shame that we are losing this talent because of a thin spread of horses,” says Jamie Lynch
