Rory Mcllroy said he feels better about the condition of his game after making the cut for the first time in two months at the Wells Fargo Championship. Mcllroy has already won the tournament twice in the past. He came back after a disappointing first round to return a five-under 66 and move on the leaderboard. In the recent past, Mcllroy has not made the cut at The Players as well as The Masters. He also failed to make it past the group stage of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. These results have seen him fall to no. 15, his lowest ranking since 2009.
“When you’re playing bad, you feel so far away, and when you’re playing good, you always think to yourself, ‘how did I feel like I was so far away?.” Rory Mcllroy said after his second round at the Wells Fargo Championship. “It’s such fine margins, especially out here when the difference between a good tee shot and an average tee shot is probably one shot.”
“When you play the way I played through that stretch in March and into April, you’re going to feel like you’re not as close (to playing well) as you probably are,” he added. “But I worked hard after Augusta. I took a week off and reset, which I needed, but then I put my head down and worked hard and at least felt better about everything coming in here.”
Mcllroy won his last tournament back in 2019 but is in contention to end that drought. He is two strokes behind overnight leader England’s Matt Wallace. Wallace said that he has been trying to progress his career but has never had the luck. He explained that the PGA Tour is a tough place and continue competing at the highest level is where he wants to be. He praised the golf courses saying that it gives equal opportunity for everyone to do well.
