Suzann Pettersen has been named the captain of Team Europe for the 2023 Solheim Cup, which will be held in Spain.

Pettersen succeeds Catriona Matthew, the two-time European captain who led Europe to back-to-back victory over Team USA at the Inverness Club earlier this year and at Gleneagles two years ago, with Pettersen holing the clutch winning putt on the last green.

Shortly after, the Norwegian resigned from professional golf, and she is now in charge of leading Europe to an unprecedented third consecutive triumph in the biannual championship.

Pettersen had nine appearances in the Solheim Cup as a player, including her remarkable final suit at Gleneagles, where she returned to compete after 18 months on paternity leave to claim her fifth European victory.

Pettersen, a two-time major champion, announced her retirement in the post-tournament press conference, saying, “It doesn’t get any better than this.” However, she remained involved with the Solheim Cup this year as one of Matthew’s assistant captains in Ohio.

“I am overjoyed to be named Solheim Cup captain; it is the greatest honour of my career,” said Pettersen, who has won 21 professional titles around the world.

“The Solheim Cup is one of my favourite golfing moments. You’re out there with your teammates and friends, all working toward the same goal. You battle for your pals and spend priceless moments with them.

“Since my start in the tournament 19 years ago, I’ve had the pleasure of playing with and under several fantastic captains. In its own way, each Solheim has been unique. You establish lifelong friendships and unforgettable moments.
