Europe scored 2.5 points in the afternoon fourballs to take a two-point lead entering Monday’s singles, boosting their chances of winning the Solheim Cup 2021 for the second time and only the second time on American territory.
Team Europe held off a resolute American surge on Sunday to take a 9-7 lead into the final day of the Solheim Cup 2021.
Catriona The hosts won three of the four-morning foursomes matches at the Inverness Club, and a resurgent Team USA temporarily led three of the afternoon fourballs, erasing Matthew’s overnight three-point lead.
In the opening fourball match, rookie duo Yealimi Noh and Mina Harigae won 3&1 over Celine Boutier and Sophia Popov to momentarily tie the overall score, only for Europe to win two and halve one of the remaining three fixtures to win the afternoon session.
Popov and Boutier were defeated 3&1 by Noh and Harigae
Harigae won those holes for Team USA with back-to-back birdies from the second, before holing a 20-footer to share the honours at the eighth and converting from even farther out to birdie the following and put the hosts three ahead at the turn.
Popov made a long-range birdie at the 10th, hit her tee shot to tap-in range at the 12th, and then won the par-five following hole to tie the match, only for Harigae to reclaim the lead when she came close to holing out at the par-four next.
Korda and Khang are defeated 1up by Ciganda and Madsen
Korda holed an eagle putt from the fringe at the second, but Europe drew level with a birdie at the fourth, before Madsen walked in a 20-foot birdie at the seventh to but the visitors back in front.
Team USA won the eighth hole with a birdie, and Khang chipped in for a winning par at the ninth to put them one up at the halfway point, but Madsen answered with a 12-foot birdie at the par-three 12th.
Kupcho and Salas halved with Maguire and Reid
Maguire made a six-foot birdie at the first and matched Salas’ two at the par-three third, only for Salas to birdie the next and win the sixth hole with a par.
When Maguire nearly holed out with her ninth-hole approach and left a kick-in birdie, Europe pulled even, but Kupcho started her back nine with a monster birdie and added another at the next to briefly put Team USA two ahead.
Ernst and Kang are defeated 3&2 by Hull and Pedersen
Ernst birdied the fifth to give Team USA an early lead before Pedersen won the seventh with a four-foot par and eagled the par-five eighth with a drive to inside 10 feet.
Hull rolled in from close range to match Ernst’s birdie at the tenth and added another at the next to put Europe two up, while Pedersen followed it up with a 20-foot birdie at the 12th to give the visitors their first of two wins in the session.
