Ryder Cup: Lowry, Poulter, and Garcia will compete for the European squad at Whistling Straits alongside Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Bernd Wiesberger, Lee Westwood, and Viktor Hovland.

Padraig Harrington, the European Ryder Cup captain, has picked Shane Lowry as one of his three captain’s picks for this year’s competition, with Justin Rose missing out.

Lowry, Sergio Garcia, and Ian Poulter have been named to Harrington’s European team for the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits later this month, but Rose, who finished tied sixth at the BMW PGA Championship after a bogey-free 65 and has been in five of the past six Ryder Cups, has been left out.

Harrington’s three picks will be joined by McIlroy, Wiesberger, Westwood, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, and Viktor Hovland in a European team trying to defend their title three years after defeating Team USA 17.5-10.5 in Paris.

Garcia will play in his eighth Ryder Cup and second in a row as a captain’s pick, after winning three of his four matches to become Europe’s record points scorer during their 2018 victory at Le Golf National.

After winning the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier this season, the 41-year-old was one of only three European players to make it through the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship, with the Spaniard coming at East Lake off the back of a tied-sixth place at the BMW Championship.

Poulter earned a spot after a strong summer on the PGA Tour, which included a tie for third at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a top-10 finish at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational, as well as a top-four finish at the abrdn Scottish Open.

The Ryder Cup veteran served as vice-captain for Darren Clarke during Europe’s 2016 humiliation on American soil but has been a member of each of Europe’s previous four winning teams, scoring the most in the 2012 ‘Miracle at Medinah’ and most recently defeating Dustin Johnson in the 2018 singles.
