PGA Tour: Sam Burns played a final-round 67 to beat Nick Watney by one shot at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi, with overnight leader Sahith Theegala losing his way after the turn.
Sam Burns won his second PGA Tour title of 2021 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, holding off a late push from Nick Watney.
Overnight leader Sahith Theegala appeared to be on his way to the first-ever triumph in Jackson, Mississippi, when he strolled to the turn in three-under, only to lose three strokes in four holes on the back nine, allowing Burns to take the lead.
And the young American took most of his opportunity, storming into the outright lead with a birdie at 11, followed by three in a row from the 13th, giving him the luxury of a two-shot lead heading into the final round.
Burns sent his second shot into the front-right bunker and splashed out to nine feet, but he was content to use the two putts he needed to win, his second on Tour after breaking his duck at the Valspar Championship in May.
Watney had previously threatened to win for the first time in nearly nine years, closing with a bogey-free 65 to take the clubhouse lead on 21 under, a number equalled by Cameron Young (68), but not enough to stop an inspired Burns.
Watney had to settle with his best finish since 2018, while Henrik Norlander narrowly lost out on a podium spot after a 64 highlighted by a 40-foot putt for eagle at the 14th in a back-nine 31.
Theegala breezed to the turn in 33 before losing his first shot of the day at the 10th, and he then blocked his second into the water at the long 11th before adding a three-putt bogey from inside 15 feet at the 13th.
