PGA Championship: We cover Phil Mickelson’s remarkable fall from favour a year after his historic victory, following his withdrawal from the 2022 PGA Championship.

Mickelson won a surprise victory at Kiawah Island’s long and punishing Ocean Course, just three weeks shy of his 51st birthday, to become the sport’s oldest major champion.

A sixth major triumph for Mickelson, who had been struggling to compete at an elite level, seemed like a fairy-tale ending to his illustrious career.

Later in the year, after the launch of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series, Mickelson made statements that tarnished his reputation as one of golf’s most popular players.

Victory celebrations, Ryder Cup deputy captaincy, and PGA Tour Champions triumph

Mickelson would have little influence at the highest level for the rest of the year after wallowing in the glory of his PGA Championship victory on social media.

He missed the cut in The Open at Royal St George’s in July after finishing 62nd at the US Open at Torrey Pines in June. Apart from his Kiawah Island victory, Mickelson only finished in the top 20 on the PGA Tour once this season, at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational, where he finished 17th.

Mickelson, on the other hand, would have success as vice-captain of the US Ryder Cup squad, which defeated Padraig Harrington’s European team 19-9 at Whistling Straits.

Mickelson also continued to shine on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, winning the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship for his fourth victory in six outings on the seniors’ circuit.

LIV gets underway with Norman at the helm | Mickelson blasts the PGA of ‘obnoxious greed’

After months of anticipation, it was ultimately revealed in late October that the Asian Tour will be restructured with the addition of ten new flagship tournaments, with sponsorship from Saudi Arabia’s Private Investment Fund.

Former World No. 1 Greg Norman has been named CEO of LIV Golf Investments, which recently pledged a commitment of more than $200 million (£145 million) to the sport.

There would be speculation about which players were interested in participating in the series, with Mickelson being one of several notable names mentioned in publications.

While it was eventually established that the new series would debut in the United Kingdom in June 2022, Mickelson was among a large number of the world’s best golfers who competed in the regular Asian Tour tournament in Saudi Arabia in February.

He would conduct an interview with Golf Digest while at the tournament, in which he would speak against the PGA Tour’s “obnoxious greed,” noting the organization’s control over players’ media rights.
