Golf News: After a low-scoring first round at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Rory McIlroy is in a three-way tie for the lead.

McIlroy recovered from a mid-round double bogey with an eagle and six birdies on his way to a six-under 66, moving him into a tie for first place with Daniel Berger and Abraham Ancer.

After an opening-round 68, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, and Webb Simpson are a shot back, while Collin Morikawa, who can climb to world No. 1 with a win this week, is two strokes back.

McIlroy, who was playing partner Morikawa, picked up a stroke at the par-three second and sent his approach to tap-in range at the fourth, before holing from 10 feet at the fifth for his third birdie in five holes.

McIlroy started his back nine with consecutive birdies after a double-bogey on the par-five ninth, with the Northern Irishman chipping in for eagle off the 14th green and taking advantage of the par-five next to move into a share of the lead.

McIlroy remarked, “I can’t count on doing what I did today.” “Out there, I made three twos, one of which was on a par-four. To make it a little less stressful, I need to take care of the par-fives.”

Berger had a four-shot lead after playing his first 11 holes in seven-under, only to bogey the 12th and drop a shot at the last to cancel out a birdie at the 15th, while Ancer is six under after five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on his back nine.

Thomas started off strong, making five birdies in his first seven holes and briefly holding the lead until a final-hole double-bogey, while Simpson bogeyed the last after birdying five of his previous six holes to get to five under.

Patrick Reed, Viktor Hovland, and Tony Finau are tied for seventh place with Morikawa, with Tyrrell Hatton in a share of 11th place on three under par, and 18 of the 20-man field under par after the first round.
