Golf News: The nice thing about golf is that you can break down all of the reasons why most of the world’s top 20, if not all of the top 10, are the next guy to beat or be the superstar for the coming year.

There are lots of individuals capable of stepping up their game and making a run for the top; the only question is who will it be. Last year, Sam Burns showed how swiftly growth can be made, rising from outside the top 150 to within striking distance of the top 10.

Could it be Justin Thomas, with Jim “Bones” on the bag and all his experience? Will it be a Brooks Koepka or Bryson DeChambeau who lets his golf speak for itself and seizes the sport by the throat? Maybe this is the year for Dustin Johnson, who has had a relatively quiet year aside from the Ryder Cup?

Any of those names, as well as Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland, may be frequent contenders in 2022, but it’s Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa who open the year as the top two in the standings at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

It’s also evident that Morikawa is a special talent who will be around for a long time, with some of the best ball-striking I’ve ever seen. There’s a reason he’s the game’s best ball-striker and could be the world’s best very soon.

He doesn’t need to modify anything about his swing, and he doesn’t need any more distance because he already hits it far enough and can compete with any of the game’s big hitters – in any setting – with the weapons he already has.

In 2021, he won a WGC, The Open, and the order of merit on the DP World Tour, while also showing growth in his chipping and putting, so you can anticipate him to have a lot of success in the coming year.

In 2022, keep an eye on Beemer’s

Although McIlroy will not be competing in Hawaii this week, I believe many of us are looking forward to seeing what he has to offer this year. When he’s firing on all cylinders, he makes the game look too easy, so it’ll be intriguing to see how he builds on a good finish to 2021.

At the Ryder Cup, we saw his love and emotion for the game, and then we watched him win The CJ Cup in Las Vegas, however, he will admit that he needs to give himself more chances in the big events in the coming months.

On a weekly basis, how is he going to improve? Last year, he won twice on the PGA Tour, but he wants to be in contention more frequently and remind everyone around him that he’s a four-time major champion.
