Golf News: Dustin Johnson’s Ryder Cup career as a player is far from over, but the two-time major champion has already set his sights on a future job as Team USA captain.

The world No. 2 was the oldest player in Steve Stricker’s team for their record-breaking 19-9 triumph at Whistling Straits last month, where he became the first American player since Lanny Wadkins in 1979 to win all five of his matches.

Johnson has been a member of five of the last six Ryder Cup teams since his debut in the biennial competition in 2010, including the last two American victories, and has also been a member of four of the last five Presidents Cup-winning teams.

The 37-year-old is anticipated to be a part of Team USA’s 2023 squad in Rome, where they will be searching for their first win on European territory in 30 years, with Johnson open to the possibility of taking on a captaincy position once his playing days are finished.

“Yeah, I’d love to do it one day,” Johnson replied when asked about being Ryder Cup captain. “I think it’d be a lot of fun.” I believe I would make an excellent captain. Yes, it’s definitely something I’d like to accomplish at some point.

“I think I’d just let the guys do their thing.” That, I believe, is the most crucial point. I don’t need to tell the players how to play a golf course or tell them what to do; I just need to put them in situations where they can succeed.

“I feel like I have a good relationship with the majority of the players out there, and hopefully I’ll be out here long enough to know the people that are going to be on the squad.”

Johnson won the Masters last November after winning the FedExCup in 2019-20, but he hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since, with his solitary victory of 2021 coming on the European Tour at the Saudi International.

“Obviously, I got off to a strong start last fall, but I didn’t play as well as I would have liked to throughout the year, but I felt like I started to play a little better towards the end of the season.

“Obviously, we had a fantastic Ryder Cup and will hopefully be able to build on that in the future. The game is starting to improve. I had a couple of weeks off, so I’m attempting to get back into the groove of things this week.

“I felt like, especially in the last 18 months, I’d played a lot of golf tournaments with few breaks. I’ll be playing this week, and then hopefully I’ll have a nice little break here for the rest of the year.”
