DP World Tour: Thunderstorms and concerns about upcoming travel restrictions clouded the second round of the Joburg Open, with Thriston Lawrence taking the lead halfway through.

Despite bogeying his penultimate hole of the day, the world No 503 carded an eagle and five birdies on his way to a second consecutive 65 at Randpark Golf Club, the South African heads into the weekend on 12 under par.

Lawrence is four shots ahead of compatriot Zander Lombard, who scored back-to-back 67s, and England’s Ashley Chesters is five shots back after a two-under 69.

Due to thunderstorms, the second round was postponed for two and a half hours in the afternoon, leaving nearly half of the field unable to complete their rounds before play was called off for the day.

Angel Hidalgo, the overnight co-leader, is tied for fourth with Shaun Norris, who has seven holes left in his second round, while local favourite Dean Burmester shot a one-under 70 to get back to par.

After South Africa was placed on the UK government’s “red list” for travel, a number of British and Irish players, including former Ryder Cup participant David Howell, with Lee Slattery among four more players to withdraw during the weather delay.

The Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour announced mid-round that the tournament would go on as planned, with the DP World Tour no longer sanctioning the SA Open Championship next week and the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December being fully cancelled owing to the Covid-19 problem.

Later that evening, the competition was truncated to 54 holes in order to assist non-South African resident players, caddies, and tournament support workers in returning to their home countries. The third and final round will be played off two tees and in threeballs at 6.30 a.m. local time on Saturday.
