Due to inclement weather, the Joburg Open was truncated to a 36-hole event, and South African Thriston Lawrence won the inaugural event of the DP World Tour era.

The season-opening had already been cut to 54 holes due to international travel restrictions imposed on South Africa, allowing non-South African resident players, caddies, and tournament support staff to return to their own countries.

Lawrence had a four-shot lead after the second round, which was only finished on Saturday due to weather delays on days one and two. Lawrence had begun the tournament with back-to-back 65s to reach 12 under par.

Despite a bogey on the first hole of his third round, the play was shortly delayed due to more inclement weather, forcing the scores to be returned.

At Randpark Golf Club, Lawrence’s countryman Zander Lombard finished second on eight under par, a shot ahead of another South African, Shaun Norris, and England’s Ashley Chesters.

‘It was a life-changing experience.’

Lawrence also secured one of the three spots available in the field for next year’s Open Championship at St Andrews, with Lombard and Chesters, with Norris being exempt.

Lawrence, 24, will be exempt from the DP World Tour until 2023 as a result of his victory.

“To be honest, I’m trembling. “It’s strange,” Lawrence remarked.

“I don’t think anyone expected things to end up this way, on a Saturday afternoon.”

“However, [I am] incredibly grateful.” It is a watershed point in my life. In my schedule, a lot of things are going to alter now.”

Because of worries about a new Covid-19 variation in the country, the DP World Tour has cancelled the South African Open Championship next week, as well as the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December.
