Golf News: The top five talking topics following the dramatic Southern Hills conclusion include Rory McIlroy and champion Justin Thomas

Golf News: Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and the scandal surrounding the Saudi-backed LIV Series are among the five talking points from the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.

More great victories are unavoidable for Thomas

On Sunday, Justin Thomas became the sixth player since WWII to win 15 PGA Tour events, including two major championships, before reaching the age of 30.

Thomas has joined the ranks of Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy, who have all won the PGA Championship.

While amazing talent helped all six achieve so early in their careers, Thomas’s inclusion in this group demonstrates his astonishing consistency.

The 29-year-old has not missed a cut since the PGA Championship last year, a streak that he extended to 24 tournaments this weekend, and he has 11 top-10 finishes in his last 17 events.

Despite his remarkable run and successful career, the victory at Southern Hills was his first since the Players Championship in 2021.

It’s a dangerous prospect for his opponents. Still, with the boost of regaining that winning sensation, Thomas appears to be perfectly poised to dominate the sport when he enters his 30s, possibly more so than many of his colleagues.

McIlroy falls short after a strong start

After the first round in Tulsa, everything seemed to be going well for Rory McIlroy.

On Thursday evening, he shot a five-under-par 65 to take the lead, reversing a disastrous start to the majors and reigniting hopes of completing his eight-year drought for one of the sport’s four majors.

However, McIlroy’s belief that all he needed to do was get off to a stronger start in a major was quickly disproven when he played himself out of contention in the second and third rounds.

A final-round comeback ensued, but it was too little, too late once again, adding validity to allegations that McIlroy can only play his best golf at majors when the pressure is off, as it was at The Masters last month.

With the slow start’ explanation for McIlroy’s major drought no longer valid, the Northern Irishman must ask himself why he can’t consistently produce his best when it counts.

Scheffler is shaken by the failure of the Big Three to compete

While the Thursday-Friday group of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth were undeniably the most intriguing, the winner appeared to be most likely to come from the group with the world’s top three ranked players.
