Giggs Remembers Sir Alex Ferguson and the Mental Strategies He Used to Rouse Players

Ryan Giggs has named Sir Alex Ferguson as a “master in psychology.”

The record performance maker from United told beIN Sports, “He was the master of psychology, he was a genius of bringing the most out of other people by throwing an arm around, or handing them a boost at half-time or at the end of the game, or taking them out hoping that the athlete would respond in a good way.”

Ferguson is commonly known as one of the best coaches in football history, having led United to 13 Premier League titles and two European Cups over his 26-year tenure at the Theatre of Dreams.

He did not always see eye to eye with his teammates, though, with reports of dressing room conflicts over a common occurrence with other stars before and during matchings.

Another such occurrence involved Ferguson admit to kicking a boot on David Beckham ’s face, leaving the ex-England winger needing stitches. Off-field disputes with Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy eventually caused both players to leave the team.

Giggs went on to confess that he had felt himself at the end of Ferguson’s anger on a variety of occasions, and that he had responded in a constructive fashion.

He also claims only a small number, including five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and former team captain Roy Keane, managed to survive Ferguson’s anger.

Giggs also lists the four Manchester United players who alone remained immune from “hairdryer treatment” by the iconic Scottish boss:

“There were three or four stars he had never had a go at. They were: Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo.”
