In the qualifiers match of Group A for the 2022 World Cup, Portugal won 1-3 over Luxembourg.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s team ended the meeting with a 1-3 victory. The hosts opened the score in the start, however.
So, while the guests had a difficult start, eventually, Portugal won 1-3 over Luxembourg.
It seemed that it would be a very easy meeting for the Portuguese national team.
But instead of the visitors flooding Luxembourg with goals, the hosts cinched the initial lead.
The guests struggled to put the ball in the opponent’s goal, but were gifted the opponent’s goal instead.
Gerson Rodrigues, playing for the hosts, scored the only goal of the first half in the 30th minute.
The Portuguese’s reply to this lead did not come quickly enough. It wasn’t until the second half that Diogo Jota scored to tie the game.
After this change of sides, though, the guests took up more initiative.
Cristiano Ronaldo, for one, showed his artistry by increasing the score to 1-2.
However, the visitors did not follow up on their goal. Meanwhile, Luxembourg put them in a good position. They were not only defending but also attacking from time to time.
But finally, the Portuguese increased their lead in the 80th minute with a Joao Palhinha goal.
Luxembourg – Portugal (1-3):
Goals: Gerson Rodrigues (30), Diogo Jota (45+2), Cristiano Ronaldo (50), Joao Palhinha (80).
