On Tuesday, Michael Carrick was in charge of his first Manchester United encounter and he didn’t play Bruno Fernandes. Instead, former Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek made a rare start for the Red Devils in the Champions League. So, under Carrick, Van de Beek, and not Bruno, started against Villareal for United in this important Group F match.
In Manchester United’s match against Villarreal on Tuesday, Donny van de Beek made only his third start of the season.
And this was also only because interim manager Michael Carrick took command of Manchester United’s team for the first time.
Manchester United made their first appearance since loyal former head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal (football transfers) on Sunday.
After his resignation, United dubbed Michael Carrick as their temporary, caretaker manager ahead of an interim appointment that they’ll make.
Under Carrick, Van de Beek, and not Bruno, Started against Villareal
But in his very first game as manager, Michael Carrick made his presence felt.
Previously, Donny van de Beek delivered a strong cameo off the bench in Solskjaer’s final game (football news). And though United lost 4-1 against Watford in the Premier League, Van de Beek scored the only goal for them.
So, in that encounter, the Dutchman scored United’s sole goal in only his third Premier League appearance of the season.
This stellar performance has now thrust Van de Beek into the starting XI, because his interim manager sees potential here.
Since arriving from Ajax for almost £45 million last year, Van de Beek has been oddly marginalized. Under Solskjaer, he made just four Premier League starts in 2020-21.
As a result of this ostracization, he has even lost his place on the international stage, in the Netherlands team.
Indeed, media reports suggested a move away during the January transfer window, but now, he may not even need to.
That is because Michael Carrick has chosen to offer him a rare opportunity right away. Donny van de Beek started for Manchester United in a crucial Champions League bout, instead of regular midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
