Ukraine bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to the Netherlands by defeating North Macedonia. While, giving their Euro 2020 struggle new life, Ukraine win 2-1, North Macedonia’s Euro 2020 campaign is in trouble, conversely.
In a strong first-half effort, Andriy Yarmolenko scored the first goal in the 29th minute.
Just five minutes later, he even set up Roman Yaremchuk to make it 2-0 for Andriy Shevchenko’s team in Bucharest.
Meanwhile, North Macedonia, who were defeated by Austria on matchday one, only improved after the break.
They equalized, to some extent, through Ezgjan Alioski, who had his penalty saved.
Incidentally, Ruslan Malinovskiy also missed a penalty, bringing the total number of missed penalties at this tournament to four.
This figure already equals the total number of missed penalties at Euro 2016.
Yet, the silver lining is that it did not cost Ukraine a crucial three points in Group C.
Ukraine was a threat right away, with Stole Dimitrievski saving Malinovskiy and Yarmolenko. And Stefan Ristovski also blocked Yaremchuk brilliantly.
Just before the half-hour mark, Yarmolenko scored at the far post. This was following an outstanding flick-on from Malinovskiy’s corner by Oleksandr Karavaev.
Five minutes later, after a superb first-time feed from Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk slotted a cool finish past Dimitrievski for 2-0.
North Macedonia closed the first half, meanwhile, without a shot on target. Indeed, Goran Pandev’s beautiful chipped finish was disallowed for offside.
They did, though, cut the lead in half 11 minutes after the break.
Alioski scored superbly on the rebound after Georgi Bushchan saved his penalty.
Viktor Tsygankov missed a golden chance for Ukraine just five minutes after coming off the bench, meanwhile.
Finally, Dimitrievski saved Malinovskiy’s penalty kick after a VAR review found Daniel Avramovski guilty of handball.
