UEFA Nations League Football News – France Won the Final over Spain
The French national team made a purposeful start when Paul Pogba created an early chance, passing to teammate Karim Benzema. Cesar Azpilicueta, however, cut off the ball before Benzema could do anything.
In response, Spain’s Ferran Torres picked out Pablo Sarabia down the other end of the pitch. But here too, the opposing goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris comfortably saved Sarabia’s attempt.
Later on, Les Bleus has to make a change just before the half time mark by bringing in Dayot Upamecano. This is because Raphael Varane left the pitch due to injury.
As the game progessed, Theo Hernandez came within inches of breaking the scoreless 0-0 deadlock for France. But his shot, at the end of the first period, only hit the crossbar.
But just moments later, Sergio Busquets played a long pass forward to Oyarzabal. And the latter brilliantly took the ball in his stride. Oyarzabal then fired a fine left-footed strike past Lloris to score his sixth international goal.
It didn’t take long for the Frenchmen to restore the parity, however. Karim Benzema sent flying a stunning curling effort to wipe out Spain’s lead just two minutes later.
With this strike, Benzema has now, personally scored two goals in as many games. PSG star Kylian Mbappe has also achieved this feat.
Things got even worse for Luis Enrique’s side in the 80th minute. Mbappe smashed a great shot into the net’s top corner after going one-one with the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
And this is how Mbappe gave the reigning world champions a decisive 2-1 lead and a well-deserved Nations League title.
