Los Blancos defender and captain Sergio Ramos is interfering with Real Madrid’s transfer for Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint Germain. And the La Liga side is furious about it.
Veteran Spanish international Sergio Ramos is heading into the final few weeks of his contract.
However, the Los Blancos skipper’s extension talks have stalled at a crucial point.
Ramos has enjoyed incredible success during his time at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu since joining from Sevilla in 2005.
Now though, the relationship between Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos may experience a tense few weeks ahead.
Indeed, club president Florentino Perez has opted to sign David Alaba instead on a free transfer. And Ramos himself is opening talks with PSG.
While, the defender is demanding a two-year contract extension, the club are standing firm on their 12-month offer.
The La Liga giants actually have a long-running club policy of only offering one-year extensions to players aged over 30.
In fact, midfield star Luka Modric signed a single season’s extension under Madrid’s football game rules. Real even made an offer with similar terms to Ramos, but he rejected it.
Ramos argues that his captaining the team and his longevity with the club call for a longer agreement.
Besides these disagreements, though, there is another reason why Real Madrid management are infuriated with Ramos.
Ramos Is Interfering with Real Madrid’s Transfer for Kylian Mbappe
According to a report from Spanish radio station Onda Cero, Ramos has angered the club in more ways than one.
The captain has been telling his teammates not to accept wage cuts, as the club are only doing so to afford a move for Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe remains Real Madrid’s No 1 target this summer transfer window.
The Madrid club plans to fund a deal for the PSG star by freeing up space on the wage bill.
This would happen after the club offloads key players and raises funds through squad player sales. (However, Ramos has told his fellow teammates the funds will also come from pay cuts from existing Real players’ salaries.)
Like Ramos, Mbappe’s own contract talks in Paris are rumoured to have hit a dead end.
So, the French Ligue 1 giants are open to a sale. They want to avoid potentially losing him for free in 2022 when his contract expires.
Mbappe’s PSG teammate Neymar Jr may also leave for Barcelona to reunite with Lionel Messi there, as Ramos may join.
