Qatar Will Host the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 from Tuesday


Qatar will host the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 from Tuesday, just 12 months before also hosting the World Cup 2022 which will be the first of its kind to take place in the Middle East.

First, we must explore all there is to know about this FIFA tournament, the Arab Cup.

For one, how many teams are taking part in this tournament? A total of 16 teams, whom FIFA have divided into four groups, will participate to win the Arab Cup.

And they are, according to the groups they belong in:

1. Group A: Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Bahrain

2. Group B: Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Mauritania

3. Group C: Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine

4. Group D: Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Sudan

Next, football fans must be wondering what format will the tournament follow.

Well, each team plays three group matches, against their three group rivals. Then, the top two sides from each group will progress to the Arab Cup quarter-finals. For this year’s tournament, these quarter-finals will take place on December 10 and 11.

The four winners from these eight quarter-finalists will meet in the semi-finals to determine two finalists. And finally, between the two teams, the final will be taking place on December 18, Qatar’s national day.

According to this format, Tunisia takes on Mauritania in the tournament’s opening fixture.

And, in the second match, Iraq, the most successful team in the competition with four titles, lock horns with Oman.

Meanwhile, hosts Qatar will play Bahrain and the UAE will take on Syria in the other matches on Tuesday.

As for the stadiums in Qatar that are going to host the matches, there are six.

While four of those stadiums have already hosted matches, two stadiums – Ras Abu Aboud Stadium in the capital Doha and Al Bayt Stadium in the northern city of Al Khor – will actually witness their inauguration on the opening day of the tournament itself.

So, six stadiums across the country will host the Arab Cup.
